LAST week saw Downes Crediton Golf Club host its Annual Festival Week that saw amateurs and professionals from across the South West compete in a range of competitions and with the course in superb condition there was some fantastic scoring.

The Downes Crediton Pro Am competition on Sunday, September 8 (the Professionals individual) saw Yelverton Golf Club’s Adam Frayne equal the course record with a fine round of five under par 65. This gave him a two shot victory over Kevin Harper (East Devon) who posted a 67 with Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge) scoring a 68 for third.

In the Pro- Am section Professional Adam Curtis from Bude and North Cornwall teamed up with three of his members, Howard Smith, Tom Haley and Simon Hobbs, to score 87 points and take victory.

In second place, also scoring 87 points but losing on the back nine, were Downes’ amateurs Sam Dyne, Matt Dyne and Dan Knight who played alongside Torbay Driving Range Professional Harry Mayers.

A bumper field took part in the Over 55’s Betterball Open on Monday, September 9 and although the weather was very changeable it did not stop some fine scoring.

Overall winners were the home club duo of Peter Carr and Kevin Woolacott whose score of 43 points saw them beat visitors Phil Dowell and Mike Woodroffe (Bridport and West Dorset) into second by virtue of a better back nine holes. Jon Cornish (DCGC) and Richard Loughton (Bovey Castle) scored 42 points to follow in third.

The Commerce Cup, played on Tuesday, September 10, saw businesses take part in a four-player team stableford and it was the Daw Bathrooms and Kitchens Team consisting of Duncan White, Ryan Artes, Dave Richards and Alan House that scored 86 points to scoop the first prize of 12 months Corporate Membership.

Neil Allport posted a superb 44 points in the Midweek Stableford on Wednesday, September 11 to take the victory.

The Ladies Festival Week Texas Scramble, played on Thursday, September 12, was won by the trio of Norma Findlay, Kelly Foster and Judith Frome (Tiverton/Exminster) with a nett score of 71, two under par.

The home pair of Sue Bond and Sue Jackson teamed up with East Devon’s Margaret Powell to post a nett 73 for second place whist Janice Sweetman, Linda Short and Gill Fowles from Portmore scored nett 74 to place third

A total of 29 teams played in the 2pm shotgun start Texas Scramble on Friday, September 13 and with very bunched scoring the home trio of Frank Sanders, Graham Jones and Simon Coupe came out on top with a nett 66.

Also scoring a 66 but finishing second were the in-form Peter Carr, Kevin Woolacott and Rod Hutchinson with third place going to Di Botterill, Gerry Hodder and Arthur Moughton posting a nett 67.

A strong field assembled for the annual Creedy Cup on Saturday, September 14 and it was Peter Russell who took advantage of the near perfect conditions to score a seven under par 43 points and take the cup.

John Welsh posted 41 points to finish second whilst Nigel Chard (40 pts) placed third. In the gross section Chris Haggar from Dawlish Warren topped the scoring with a four over par 32 points with Downes’ members Dave Slee (31 pts) second and Rodin Mackay (29 pts) third.

Downes Crediton closed its Festival Week on Sunday, September 15 with its Mixed Open and the quartet of Rebecca Aven, Ying Wong, David Taylor and Nick Murch from Downes’ were victorious with a superb team score of 81 points.

Following in second place were Murray Smith from Downes who teamed up with Tiverton members Charlotte Snow, Neil Greening and Karen Allsopp to post 79 points.
