A BODY found in the River Taw in the search for Taylor Charlton has been formally identified as that of the missing Barnstaple teenager.

A large-scale search operation was launched after Taylor, who was 14 at the time of his disappearance, was reported missing.

He was last seen at 10.41pm on Friday, May 8 on CCTV near a footpath close to Tarka Leisure Centre and the Seven Brethren car park, Barnstaple, heading in the direction of the River Taw.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in North Devon on Friday, June 12. He has been released on police bail.

A body, which has now been confirmed as Taylor’s, was found on Wednesday, June 24 in the River Taw near Sticklepath, Barnstaple.

A woman in her 40s was then arrested on suspicion of murder in North Devon on Thursday, July 2. She has also been released on police bail.

“Taylor’s loved ones continue to be supported by specialist officers at this incredibly difficult and distressing time,” said a Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson.

“We respectfully ask that the family’s privacy is respected as they come to terms with this tragic news.

“This is not the outcome that anyone hoped for and we know how deeply this will affect the local community who have shown tremendous support throughout the search.

“An investigation into the circumstances surrounding Taylor’s death remains ongoing and detectives will continue to establish the full facts.

“Two people arrested in connection with the investigation into Taylor’s disappearance remain on police bail while enquiries continue.

“We continue to ask members of the public to help our investigation by avoiding speculation and by not sharing any unconfirmed information online.”
