MONDAY, May 9 saw the seniors play a better ball stableford, the first Open of the season, at Downes Crediton Golf Club.

The event saw 144 seniors from across the county take part and despite some inclement weather in the afternoon there was some fine scoring.

Three pairs posted “best of the day” 43 points, but winning courtesy of a better back nine holes were home pair Bob Dobson and Graham Pateman.

The other 43 points scores were also scored by Downes members Colin Ray and Ron Berry, finishing second, with Gerry Hodder and Alan Willey finishing third.

The top “away” pair score went to Robert Soar and Colin Davis with 42 points beating Ian Roberts and Robert Semmens into second, also 42 points. Tony Mackness and Robin Grenyer followed in third with 41 points.

Jason Arnold was dominant in the Mid Week Stableford, played on Wednesday, May 11, scoring 42 points to win by six points from second placed Darren Clifford (36). Paul Edworthy followed in third with 35 points.

The ladies played their Peugeot Coronation Foursomes on Thursday, May 12, and top spot was taken by the pair of Di Parsons and Shirley Stunell scoring 32 points.

Three points further back, scoring 29, were the pairs consisting of Liz Mapson and Judith Ezard and Sue Bonner and Annet Coles finishing second and third respectively.

Saturday and Sunday (May 14 and 15) saw Downes Crediton and Okehampton Golf Club’s host the Mid Devon Foursomes. As always a big field supported the event and with stunning weather a great weekend was had by all.

Winning the overall handicap pairs were Okehampton duo Richard Reid and Paul Skidmore scoring an impressive 38 and 40 for a 78 points total.

The top scratch prize was won by the pair of Chris and Chloe Howard from Borringdon Park scoring 56 points whilst the Best Mixed pair honours were won by David and Sue Williams (Okehampton) with their total of 66 points.
