MONDAY, September 19, saw Downes Crediton Golf Club seniors play their Grandad’s Trophy.

Colin Parr was the star of the show scoring a spectacular gross 74 off of his 13 handicap to amass a huge 45 points to take the overall victory.

This also gave him victory in Division One by three points over Mike Palmer (42 pts) with Brian Williams in third scoring 40.

Graham Jones took the honours in Division Two scoring 38 points beating Barry Lias into second place by a single point (37 pts). David Cousins finished third scoring 36 points and beating two others with a better back nine.

Wednesday, September 21 saw Downes members compete in the Midweek Stableford finals. More than 70 players competed throughout the season with the final seeing the top eight from the Order of Merit played off for two spots and earn the right to team up with Club Professional Barry Austin and Club Captain to play in next years Downes Crediton Pro-Am.

Winning by three clear points and taking the first spot was Gerry Tomlinson scoring a fine 38 points. Second saw a tie on 35 points but winning on a better back nine was Ben Marchant to take the final spot with Paul Edworthy just missing out and finishing third.

A spot in next years National “Daily Mail” Foursomes draw was up for grabs for the ladies on Thursday (September 22) and taking victory were the ever-consistent pair of Lyn Parry and Fran Shrubsole.

Their 34 points score saw them take victory by a single point from Shirley Stunell and Di Parsons (33 pts) with June Mitchell and Betty Willey following in third scoring 29 points.

Once again a beautiful sunny morning, with the course in tip top condition on Saturday, September 24, greeted Downes members as the turned up to compete in the Ray Shire Trophy, a three man team best one score to count.

Winning with a fine 14 under par nett 56 was the trio of Joe Hull, Todd Dove and Adam Westle. This gave them a two shot winning margin over Graham Jones, Rodin MacKay and Simon Coupe (nett 58).

Third place went to Lee Sylvester, Steve Fewings and Sam Hills scoring a nett 59 and beating Chris Bruce, Adam Hull and David Taylor into fourth place courtesy of a better back nine.

Sunday, September 25 saw Downes host their final Open of the season, the Mixed Greesomes Stableford, attracting golfers from over the South West.

Winning with a fine under par score of 41 points were the Teignmouth duo Anthony and Hannah Stephens. This gave them a three point victory over second place Downes pairing of Gerry Hodder and Di Botterill with Okehampton’s Allan and Penny Deakin third scoring 37 points.

The Summer Knockout Finals continued to be played last week and winning the Crown and Sceptre, Adrian Cram beat Jason Hayman one up.

In the Seniors Individual K/O Alan Draper overcame Joe Hull one up in a titanic struggle that saw some tremendous golf including a hole-in-one for Alan Draper at the seventh hole.

Martin Garnsey won an exciting tussle on the 18th green one up over Chris Porter and Chris Wall to retain the Gardner Salvers, the Summer Foursomes Knockout.
