MEMBERS of Downes Crediton Golf Club played for the Cynthia King Robinson Bowl, a mixed pairs stableford, on Sunday, October 2.

Winning with a fine 41 points were June Mitchell and Dennis Wright. Following in second place, a point behind, were Judith Ezard and Paul Ezard (40 pts) with Ying Wong and Steve Lay third scoring 39 points.

Monday, October 3 saw the seniors, who had won monthly medals throughout 2016, play off for the medal winners cup.

Winning the prestigious trophy with a nett 73 was the in-form Alan Draper. Peter Johnson finished second, a shot further back (nett 74).

The rest of the seniors competed in a roll-up stableford with top spot going to Robert Rippon with an impressive 43 points. Barry Lias finished second scoring 41 points with Stan Gibson third, posting a 40 point total.

Wednesday, October 5 saw the annual playing of the Min Lwin Trophy, an individual stableford.

Taking the trophy with a 36 points total was Colin Wheatcroft, one point clear of second placed Patrick McCeigh. Jim Hutchison finished third also scoring 35 points but losing to McVeigh in the back nine holes.

Downes ladies played in their EWFA Medal on Thursday, October 6 with the winner taking the Mapledoram Cup.

Lyn Parry took the honours posting a fine nett 72 that beat Doreen Warren (nett 72) into second courtesy of a superior back nine holes.

Sue Barr followed in third, scoring a solid level par nett 73 whilst Fran Shrubsole (nett 74) was fourth, a shot further back.

Saturday, October 8 saw the club come together to play in Greenkeepers’ Revenge, a fun Texas Scramble competition where the greenstaff put the pin positions in some very tricky and interesting positions!

Winning with a score of 63 were Barrie Phillips, Adam Westle, Stephan Cross and Joe Hull. Following on in second place were John Smale, John Cornish, Peter Blinkhorn and Jerry Thornton scoring 65 with John Warren, David Woodstock, Colin Wheatcroft and Clive Elliot third, losing on countback with a nett 65.

The best mixed score of the day went to Betty Willey, Alan Willey, Gerry Hodder and Diane Botterill who posted a nett 64.

Downes men competed in the “Daily Mail” Foursomes qualifier on Sunday, October 9, with the winners going on to represent the club in next year’s national “Daily Mail” knockout.

The reliable pair and last year’s winners, Martin Garnsey and Maurice, made it two in a row as once again they took top spot with a very impressive nett 67.

This gave them a five shot cushion over second placed Mike Nott and Andy Frankum (nett 72) who beat Jason Arnold and Ben Rowe (nett 72) into third, courtesy of a better back nine holes.
