GEORGE Crabbe took this year’s John Baird Trophy, played at Downes Crediton Golf Club on Monday, April 9.

His tremendous score of 39 points saw him win the overall trophy and Division Two as he beat Wally Phillips who also scored 39 points but was beaten by a better back nine. Wally did take the Division One top spot. David Cousins finished in third place scoring 37 points.

The second of the ladies county stableford was played on Thursday, April 12 and Tracey Chandler stole the show scoring 37 points in tough conditions.

Fran Shrubsole, Tracey’s nearest competitor scored 33 points and Diane Botterill took the Second Division prize scoring 32 points.

The men got to play the summer course in the season’s first medal competitions on Saturday, April 14 and after all the horrible weather that the South West has suffered, the course was playing extremely difficult but it didn’t stop our members from posting some great scores.

Darren Russell shot a brilliant 81 gross 71 nett to take the Cody Medal and, with Downes professional Barry Austin in the Lombard Pro Am he was closely followed by John Rance who scored 93 gross nett 72 to finish second overall and take top spot in Division Three.

Gerry Tomlinson took Division Two with a score of 87 gross nett 73 and the scratch prize was taken by Tom Long who scored a 79 gross to win.
