Saturday, August 21 saw a fantastic turnout by Downes members as more than 100 players competed in the Captain’s Day and Drive in support of club captain Peter Blinkhorn and his charity Headway Devon.

In the golf the quartet of David Taylor, Rohan Hardeman, John Huskinson and Steve Blackmore took the honours scoring an impressive 93 points in a two scores to count team stableford.

The winners of the ladies section were Sue Bond, Trish Wallis, Viv Bailey and Anne Woodger scoring 77 points.

After the golf there was some catching up to do with the cancelled March Captains Drive In’s taking place as well as the previous Captains “Putt Out”. Firstly Andrew Gilg (Seniors), Shirley Stunell (Ladies), Graham Dyne (Club) and Leah Jackaman (Junior) putted out.

This was followed by incoming Club Captain Peter Blinkhorn, Ladies Captain Sue Jackson and Senior’s Captain Peter Stunell all hitting fine shots down the middle of the first fairway to belatedly signal the start of their terms some 16 months after they actually started! Well played to all.

Finally previous Club Captain Graham Dyne officially handed over his Captain’s Charity cheque for £5,000 to Devon Air Ambulance.
