DURING the course of this summer, Downes Golf Club enjoyed their first season participating in the annual East Devon Golf League, alongside Axe Cliff, Bovey Tracey, Exeter Golf and Country, Exminster, and Honiton.
In this league all six teams host one fixture, involving three matches between the teams over five rounds.
The final round of fixtures took place at home, with Downes Crediton beating Axe Cliff, to complete their unbeaten record in the league.
Downes finished top of the league table with 27 points, winning all five of their matches.
Honiton won their last match against Exeter, consolidating their second-placed position.
This event caps a very enjoyable and successful summer for Downes Crediton Golf Club, led by EDGL team captain, Ken Bones, pictured holding the shield, having secured the inaugural Dartington Cup recently.
Following last week’s “Ladies In Pink” event, we should congratulate Liz Guildford for winning the Pink Day Stableford competition with 34 points, and Lyn Parry who was second with 32 points.
It was a well-attended event in chillier-than-recent conditions, and helped raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Now.
The Downes Ladies went for their annual away break on September 21 and 22 to Bowood Park Hotel and Golf Club in Cornwall.

Their report of the away day reads as follows: “We were very lucky with the weather having a sprinkling of rain on the first day, and then glorious sunshine on the second day.
“The course was in good condition and had benefitted from the recent rain. We had a lovely two-course meal and excellent breakfast.
“A most enjoyable away-day break with two enjoyable rounds of golf.”
Saturday, September 27 was the Captain’s Day competition, with a shotgun start. Another large field took part in the event.
More on this competition next week.
