WE have mentioned in several previous articles that Downes Golf Club is a Members Club, and not a privately run business.
While there are paid employees, much of the work of the Club is done on a voluntary basis.
The management of the Club is undertaken by committee, a board of directors.
At the recent Special General Meeting new members to the board were elected, including a new chairman.
Downes Golf Club now has its first lady chairman/chair person. Lyn Parry has taken on this role, and her friend, Fran Shrubsole, has taken on the role of Director of Food and Beverage. We wish them every success as they steer at the Club over the next year or so.
On Friday, October 2, Downes was pleased to host a Golf Day for Alphington Football Club.
After a bacon bap and coffee the stableford competition, all 31 tee times, got under way. The event was followed by a buffet and some refreshment in the clubhouse. The event was also an excellent fundraiser for the club.
Last week’s article mentioned the Thursday evening 9 hole Stableford competition that runs through the season.
The final event was played on Thursday, and the inaugural Thursday Order of Merit winner was Andy Dafters.
Andy played in 20 events across the season, winning three and finishing top of the standings with 78 points.
Tristan Kershaw took second place with 67 points, also playing 20 events with three wins. Jerry Thornton finished third on 60 points, with one win. Well played, all three!
For many members, the Thursday competition has become a highlight of the summer.
Some good golf, a great clubhouse atmosphere and plenty of players staying on for a beer, and one of the kitchen’s specials. Here’s to more Thursday evenings like those next season!
