THOSE who follow reports about Downes Crediton Golf Club will not be surprised to find that there hasn’t been a great deal of golf during the last week.

The floods have subsided save a few puddles in the fairways, and of course the greens are very soft. But in spite of what the weather has thrown at it the course is looking quite splendid, beautifully green, and very inviting.

It really is quite frustrating to only have limited opportunities to play our favourite game.

There have been a couple of periods of time without rain, and a few hardy souls have managed to play in nine hole competitions.

Indeed, Monday, February 2 was probably the most opportune day for Golf, and 30 Seniors managed a nine hole competition which was resplendent under the name of the “Seniors Trump Stapleford”. One of the rules of this competition was that the competitors were allowed to kick the ball three times.

Whether that had any connection with the name of the competition we will leave our readers to speculate!

In spite of the conditions Stephen Gidley managed to lead the field and returned a score of 23 points.

Nick Bromell received the Clubman of the Year trophy from Club Captain Andy Rogers.

Nick has been a prime mover in the club, especially within the Seniors Section. He set up the Seniors Leadership Team and organised the two most prestigious Club fixtures against Saunton and Royal North Devon for many years.

This year he has been the prime mover in arranging a new competition that will feature Crediton Rugby Club, Crediton Football Club, Sandford Cricket Club and Downes Crediton.

In the past Nick has represented all four clubs. This event should be a lot of fun!
