ON Monday, January 12, 60 Seniors set off on their Texas Scramble. They began the tournament at 9.30am with a Shotgun start. This meant that they were able to finish in time for lunch and, most importantly, the Annual Seniors Prizegiving.
This is really the culmination of the Seniors year.
Downes Golf Club has a large Senior section. They play in competitions regularly on a Monday throughout the year.
In order to accommodate everyone the Monday competitions are organised as an 18 hole or 9 hole event, so all are included.
There are also many Seniors friendlies throughout the season against other Devon clubs, both home and away matches.
There is also the prestigious Emerton Court tournament as well as League competition during the Summer.
In addition to this many Seniors play regular social golf throughout the week.
The Seniors Presentation looks back through the year, and numerous trophies and awards are presented to the winners of the many competitions that have taken place.
Looking at the list of competitions of various kinds, no less than 36 formal events take place through throughout the season.
There are individual events, team events, knockout tournaments, monthly medals, an Away Day, and the famous Devonians versus the Rest of the World match.
There are far too many tournaments and trophies to mention the winners all by name.
However, special mention should be given to the following. The Senior Golfer of the Year in 2025 was Andy Frankum. The Matchplay Knockout winner was Peter Woodger.
The winner of the Penny Eclectic Bowl was Quin Paine-Cook, and the Seniors Scratch Champion was Martin Garnsey.
Very well done to them all, and indeed to all the other champions, and everyone who took part in the competitions. It has been an excellent Seniors year.
