IT was a big week of golf at Downes Crediton as the mens and ladies sections both competed for their respective Club Championships.

The Ladies Club Championship was played over 36 holes on Wednesday and Thursday (June 22 and 23) and Stacey Ford made it three titles in a row scoring 81 + 78 for a 159 total.

This gave Ford an eight shot winning margin over her nearest challenger Tracey Chandler with Lynn Hazelton following on in third.

Tracey Chandler took the honours in the Handicap Championship with Lynn Hazelton winning the prize for the best single day score.

The Mens Championship saw Ollie Greenslade crowned Champion after a tremendous final round tussle with reigning champion Martin Garnsey and Kev Cole.

Last Saturday (June 18) had seen Greenslade shoot an opening round 73 to take a two shot lead into the final round on Saturday, June 25 to line up the final three ball with Garnsey and Cole.

Greenslade never lost the lead but a couple of occasions saw Garnsey pull level. One such time was on the 18th tee, the 36th hole, the testing 196-yard par three surrounded by 50 enthralled members.

Both their tee shots missed the green and Garnsey chipped nicely to 12-feet whilst Greenslade played a superb deft chip to a foot.

Garnsey then struck a beautiful putt only to see it lip out leaving Greenslade to tap in and take the title and receive cheers from the crowd.

Neil Wood took victory in the Buller Bowl (Handicap Championship) posting a pair of three under par nett 67’s.

This total pushed first round leader, Steve Gidley, into second place as he followed up his first round nett 65 with a 73 for 138. Eddie Yeandle finished third two shots further back.

Monday, June 20 saw the seniors play the Albert Midsummers Cup, an individual stableford played off three-quarters handicap. Victory went to Steve Lay with an impressive 36 points, one point clear of second placed Paul Fricker (35).

Andy Scoots and Richard Tomkins finished third and fourth respectively, both posting 34 points.

Ben Marchant continued his recent good form winning the Mid Week Stableford on Wednesday, June 22 with a 36 point score.

Paul Sandercock finished second with 35 points beating Jim Dunlop into third courtesy of a superior back nine.
