EXE Valley Farm Shop near Thorverton is seeking to extend its alcohol licence hours until after midnight on Fridays and Saturdays for “occasional evening events”.

The farm shop is currently allowed to sell alcohol between 8am and 11pm seven days a week.

Marion Cann has applied for these hours to be extended on Fridays and Saturdays until 12.30am the next day for “occasional weddings, private functions and events held within our function rooms”.

She also wants to be able to have live music during the same hours. Live entertainment would be restricted to a maximum of six hours including breaks.

Both the alcohol sales and live music would be able to take place indoors and outdoors if the licence is granted as applied for.

“Exe Valley Farm Shop and Ruby Red Café currently operate with both on and off licence permissions, offering locally sourced beers, ciders, wines and spirits alongside fresh farm shop produce and café facilities,” Ms Cann said.

“This variation is intended to provide flexibility for occasional evening events and private functions, rather than day-to-day late-night trading.”

Mid Devon District Council’s licensing sub-committee will decide on the application when it meets on Friday, July 17.

Six people have written to the council objecting to the plans.

“On December 13, 2025, a licensed event at the premises involved loud amplified music continuing until approximately 2am,” said one member of the public.

“The noise levels were such that it was impossible to sleep, and my partner, son and I remained awake until the event had finished.”

Another person said: “The public register states that the applicant seeks permission for live music both indoors and outdoors.

“However, the narrative text submitted by the applicant states that events will be held ‘within the indoor function rooms’.”

You can see the application on Mid Devon District Council’s website under reference 031757.
