GARY Stanley in his letter to the Crediton Courier of August 14 is opposed to the choice of site at Newcombes Meadow largely on the grounds of lack of parking.

I think he has overlooked the fact that around 20 per cent of households in the UK do not have access to a car: maybe slightly fewer in Crediton, but probably in that region.

For those without the use of a car, his proposed edge-of-town location at Wellparks is distinctly inaccessible.

He mentions that the war memorial may need to be relocated.

I am sure that can be achieved sensitively and with due respect should it prove necessary.

I have timed the walk from St Saviour’s car park to the war memorial. It takes under 71/2 minutes.

From the Market Square car park, a tad over five minutes.

I’m no spring chicken and was not hurrying.

Would the prospect of a seven minute walk from my car deter me from going to a gig? I don’t think so.

He mentions accessibility for those who are frail or disabled, which is a fair point.

No doubt most who are in that predicament are likely to be driven by an able-bodied companion who can drop off, then park and walk back. But it’s a reasonable reservation.

The reality is that no single location will be perfect. I guess the choice of this site is driven by what is available and achievable.

It will be an asset to Newcombes Meadow and help increase foot-fall and add to the viability of our town centre.

Let’s get behind this proposal and do whatever we can to bring it to fruition. It will be a great asset to the town.
