A former GP who retired early with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease is to be the keynote speaker at a Dementia Awareness Day in Crediton to be held at the Boniface Centre on Wednesday, September 16, from 10am to 3pm, dedicated to raising awareness and improving understanding of dementia.

The inspirational Dr Jennifer Bute will give an account of her refusal to become a victim that has become a life-affirming message for many others in the same situation.

She says that she is “living with dementia, not suffering from it,” and has a very practical approach, offering people strategies for coping when living alone.

She adds: “Since my diagnosis it has become my passion to try and help people understand about dementia, because I do believe it is a great opportunity, a God-given unexpected gift in order to understand this hurt section of society.”

The Dementia Awareness Day is part of the campaign by the Crediton Dementia Action Alliance – made up of representatives of the Crediton branch of Devon Senior Voice (DSV), the town’s two Rotary Clubs, together with Alzheimer’s Society volunteers and other community groups – to improve the lives of people with dementia, and their carers, in Crediton.

As well as Dr Bute, the free public event – including buffet lunch and refreshments – will feature speakers on a range of topics, from insights into dementia to what is available to support patients and carers, and information stands hosted by various organisations.

Please book for the day by Friday, September 11, either by calling 01363 775502 or emailing: [email protected] .
