THE Bookery, in partnership with Sustainable Crediton, is proud to present award-winning authors Professor Dame Henrietta Moore and Arthur Kay in conversation at 7pm on Thursday, October 2 at The Bookery.
Join us for an evening of bold ideas and critical conversation as Professor Dame Henrietta Moore and Arthur Kay discuss their groundbreaking book Roadkill: Unveiling the True Cost of Our Toxic Relationship with Cars, winner of Non-Fiction Book of the Year at the Gilded Acorn Book Awards.
This provocative and timely work explores the hidden costs—financial, social, ethical, and environmental—of our car-dominated culture and offers a compelling vision for a healthier, freer, and more sustainable urban future.
In Roadkill, Professor Moore and Mr Kay dismantle the myth of the car as a symbol of freedom, revealing how it has instead hemmed in our cities, eroded public space, and restricted our choices. Drawing on real-world examples, philosophical insights, and practical policy recommendations, they challenge us to rethink our relationship with cars and imagine a world where mobility enhances, rather than limits, our lives.
Roadkill is both a visual and intellectual journey through the consequences of car culture—from the staggering human cost of traffic fatalities to the environmental toll of urban sprawl. The authors argue that breaking up with cars is not just possible, but essential, and offer a roadmap for individuals, communities, and governments to reclaim their streets and their futures.
Professor Moore and Mr Kay will be answering questions and signing copies of Roadkill, which will be available to purchase at the event.
Tickets at £5 and £20 (inclusive of a £2 book discount) for a book and ticket available at the bookshop or via The Bookery website thebookery.org.uk.
