MEMBERS of Crediton and District Lions Club visited the WESC Foundation in Exeter on Tuesday, September 25 and took the opportunity to present a cheque for £150 raised at a recent bingo session.

WESC Foundation aims to help visually impaired people learn how to take their place in society and has been pursuing that vision by providing a specialist centre for education and training since 1837.

During the Lions’ tour of the facility they saw how the lives of those affected by visual impairment are enhanced and improved by the myriad of professionals who support each child and young person.

Andy Roberts and Jon Duckham of WESC showed many of their facilities including the hydrotherapy pool, the sensory room, the Horticultural facility and much more.

Lions President Peter Bryan said that it was amazing to see the facility in operation and the dedication of the staff.

He said: “The scale and the scope of WESC is truly fantastic, hidden behind a small driveway off Topsham Road. Exeter and the South West should be truly proud of the service that it offers. We hope that we will be able to do more to help in the future.”

Jon Duckham of WESC said: “The money you have raised will help blind and partially sighted children and young adults with additional disabilities have the same opportunities and life chances as everyone else.

“We strive to give our young people the best start in life by developing their skills, confidence and independence.

“Thanks to our kind supporters, the young people at WESC are able to enjoy a whole range of activities, such as sailing and horse riding as well as learning the necessary skills to undertake simple tasks that you and I take for granted, such as making a sandwich or getting to the shops.”

The Crediton Lions all agreed that it was a truly memorable visit.
