THIS year’s three-day Devon County Show proved to be a hit for local exhibitors and members of the public alike.
Local farmer John May, who farms in partnership with his wife Sue, of Priorton Barton, Crediton, exhibited 15 of his Priorton Red Ruby Devons and returned with an array of rosettes.
This included four firsts, five seconds and Reserve Male Champion with their two-year-old bull Priorton Brandy.
It was also a good show for Milly Bradley, from Witheridge, with her Thelbridge Hall Ford Pedigree Highland Cattle and Cathy Webb of Parkhill Flock of Pedigree Wensleydale sheep, near Crediton, owned by Mr and Mrs Robert Webb.
Local businesses with trade stands saw many regular and new customers visit.
Crediton area farmer John Lee OBE DL was this year’s Show President.
He had a particularly busy show, not least escorting the show’s royal visitor, HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh around the show ground but also presenting many prizes to winners.
John said: "For well over a century, the show has been a cornerstone of country life-bringing together communities from town and countryside to celebrate the best of Devon.
"As the largest annual event in the county calendar, it reflects our heritage, enterprise, and enduring connection to the land.
"At its heart, the Devon County Show is a celebration of agriculture. Farming shapes not only our landscape but also our identity, economy, and way of life.
"In recent years, the sector has faced significant challenges, yet Devon's farmers, producers, and rural businesses continue to demonstrate resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
"The show provides an important platform to recognise these achievements and to strengthen connections between producers and the wider public.
"I am particularly proud of the work of Farmwise, which helps young people better understand how food reaches our plates and the vital role British agriculture plays in all our lives.
"Events of this scale rely on the dedication of many, so my sincere thanks go to the show team, volunteers, sponsors, exhibitors, judges, stewards, and emergency services, whose efforts ensure the show's continued success."
Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Council for Devon County Agricultural Association, which organises the show is Crediton area farmer Andrew Gray.
