Crediton RFC FIRST XV 47 - CULLOMPTON RFC 23

WE signed off our home league campaign with an impressive 47-23 victory in what was, as it always is, a fiercely contested encounter against Cullompton.

With it being the last opportunity to perform in front of our home support this season, the squad was determined to give the crowd something to cheer about.

A key focus throughout the week had been improving our attacking threat after a below par display the previous weekend and that intent would eventually shine through.

As expected, Cullompton came out firing. Locked in a relegation battle, the visitors threw everything at us in the opening stages and we found ourselves under sustained pressure.

At 25 minutes into the contest, we were trailing 18-7 after struggling to contain Cullompton’s early surge.

Recognising the need to settle, we regrouped and began to regain composure. The response was immediate and effective, tightening up defensively while starting to find rhythm in attack.

By the time the halftime whistle blew, we had turned the game on its head to lead 21-18.

The second half saw us deliver fully on our pre match objectives. In attack we became far more organised and cohesive, creating space and opportunities for line breaks.

With confidence growing, we began to play with freedom and instinct, and the tries soon followed in quick succession.

It was a superb attacking display, and we pulled away convincingly to secure a 47-23 win and cap off the home season in style.

The only sour note on an otherwise excellent afternoon was the injury to one of Crediton’s standout players.

Dan Yendell suffered a broken arm and is set to undergo surgery. Everyone at the club wishes him a full and speedy recovery.

Scorers – Tries; Crang (2), Clarke (2), Cookson, Wonnacott, Luxmoore – Cons; Davey (6)

This season saw the introduction of a new promotion pathway, with teams finishing 2nd to 5th in our league entering playoffs for the chance to face the Regional 2 Severn playoff winners.

The victor from that match will then meet the loser of the Regional 1 South West relegation playoff, with the winner securing their place in Regional 1 South West next season.

We end our campaign on April 11 away at champions Weston-super-Mare and, depending on how results go we could finish 5th.

TAVISTOCK RFC FIRST XV 36 - CREDITON RFC SECOND XV 7

The 2nd XV made the trip to Tavistock on Saturday, buoyed by a strong run of recent performances and confident heading into the fixture.

The hosts had other ideas, producing an impressive display built on powerful running and hard, direct carries.

For Crediton, it was a frustrating afternoon where missed tackles and handling errors proved costly, and despite their efforts they couldn’t quite find their rhythm. Tavistock were deserved winners on the day.

Scorers – Try; Joe Dodge – Con; T Ronchetti
