WITH just seven matches left to the end of the season and lying in second position in the league last Saturday, April 4, Sandford First travelled to the edge of Dartmoor to play Chagford, who were in fifth position.
The pitch was set just in front of the Moor which offered a little protection from a blustery wind.
At 3pm on a firm pitch the home side kicked off and one of Sandford’s first attacks saw fullback Danny Stevens shoot wide.
On seven minutes a Chagford through ball caught "ford" square at the back and keeper Headley had to head the ball away into touch.
Sandford had more of the chances with forward Baker and midfielder Rowan Bosacki going close.
On 17 minutes a "ford" defender fouled a Chagford player just outside the box and the resulting free kick sailed over the bar.
Players on both sides had trouble controlling the high balls in the blustery wind and hard ground.
Several chances went begging before on the 13th minutes with an assist from Tudor Morgan Hugget, Matt Baker scored, 0-1.
Halftime arrived and Sandford went in to the changing rooms with a slender lead.
The second half saw Sandford kick off and after few minutes of end to end play Chagford were awarded a corner from which Sandford made a mess of the clearance and the home side levelled the score, 1-1.
On 63 minutes Sandford made four substitutes and it wasn't long before Jayden Mark John coming on up front scored, 1-2.
That was the way the game ended. It could have been more goals for Sandford but for some lazy finishing.
Three points on the road, well done to all the lads.
On Saturday, April 11 Sandford go to Cheriton Fitzpaine for another derby match, KO 3pm.
