NORTH TAWTON 20 - VEOR 13

NORTH Tawton welcomed the team from Veor to Taw Meadow on a very wet Saturday afternoon.

Veor I am told is a parish very near Camborne. The rugby club started as a break away by a group of miners and farmers many years ago.

They arrived full of confidence sitting well above North Tawton in the league.

Yet again without trying to labour the point, North Tawton take to the field with several key players missing from the starting 15.

They kick off with the rain in their faces.

Because of the conditions, any ball handling skills were very difficult for both sides.

A yellow card for the visitors on nine minutes does nothing to help their cause.

North Tawton, taking a lead they never lost the whole game, with a penalty 3-0.

North Tawton were on the front foot trying some of their fast flowing rugby only for the last pass to go astray with the bar of soap for a ball playing its part.

As it seems the norm these days the Tawton pack always look smaller in size than the opposition but fear not they hold their own and a good push from a scrum and they are over for a opening try by Matt Baker, with the kick missed gives us 8-0.

Almost straight away Veor hit back with a try of their own 8-3 and with this score seem to wake up and put some phases of their own together.

We start the second half with a well worked try, the result of some quick passing that did stick to hand.

Jordan Cornthwaite was over for the try, with the kick added, Tawton increase their lead to 15-3.

You could be thinking the game’s all but in the bag but the next 10 minutes or so belong to Veor who, stung by the Tawts last try, really up their game.

Two tries later, plus one conversion got them to within two points. We went into the last quarter with the score at 15-13.

North Tawton still look the better placed for the win but the missed passes were making it more uncomfortable than it should be.

Another try would take the game away from the visitors and settle any nerves creeping into the players and fans alike so a good run by the backs, the ball ends up in the safe hands of Tom Chisholm.

He was over for the try and with kick gave us the final score of 20-13.

It was a much needed win after the two previous losses.

In truth not a game to remember but as the season really gets going, a win was a win.

Next we are away to Bude.
