CREDITON RFC 1ST XV 53-28 WELLINGTON

AFTER a challenging start to the season, marked by injuries and retirements, the boys have shown unbelievable character grinding out five consecutive wins heading into the Christmas break.

Travelling away to Wellington has always been a tough assignment for us, and we went into the fixture fully aware that even a slight off day could result in defeat.

Thankfully, the performance was anything but. For the first 60 minutes, the lads produced a complete display on both sides of the ball.

We spent close to 95 per cent of the first half camped in Wellington’s half, punishing them with a clinical set piece and sharp attacking play in the wider channels.

Defensively, we were equally impressive, holding our shape and showing real discipline which was a hugely encouraging sign.

However, we didn’t have it entirely our own way, Wellington did capitalise on one of their rare entries into our half with a converted try. Even so, we went into the break with a commanding 7-29 lead.

The second half continued in much the same fashion, and with 20 minutes remaining we had stretched the scoreline to 7-48.

At that point, Wellington had nothing to lose and threw the kitchen sink at us, scoring three converted tries in a 15-minute spell to secure themselves a bonus point.

There were standout performances across the park, notably from Josh Woodland, who grabbed a hat-trick and continues to enjoy a fantastic season.

The feeling in camp is extremely positive as we head into the Christmas break. The squad will fully switch off and enjoy some well-earned downtime, before returning refreshed and ready for a massive push in the new year as we set our sights firmly on hunting down the top four.

Tries: Woodland (three), Clarke, Mortimer, Goldman, Hunt, Davey; conversions: Avery-Wright (five); penalties: Avery-Wright.
