TWO weeks ago, we reported enthusiastically on the success of the Downes Palairet team, following their success at East Devon, playing against Churston Golf Club.

From here the team went on to compete in the Palairet Semi-finals and Finals day at Stover Golf Club.

Following this event the post on the Downes Facebook page read as follows: “Fantastic effort from the DCGC Palairet team at Stover Golf Club today.

“They eventually lost out in a close match 2-3 to Dawlish Warren in the semi-final. The Warren team were the successful winners of the competition last year.

“The team should be very proud of themselves for getting to finals day where everyone contributed fully today, and in previous rounds. A big shout out to Darren Russell for captaining the team so well.

“It was really good to see so many members who came along to support. Good luck to Warren in the final, and many thanks to Stover for hosting the event. The course looked superb. Thanks also to Devon Golf for their support and organisation.

“The team are already looking forward to next year's event!”

It was a very busy week for the Seniors Section. On Monday the Seniors held their weekly competition.

This week it was Phil Ollis and Mike Dunk trophies. The event was won by Chris Theedom with an excellent 43 points

On Tuesday the Seniors hosted the annual Stan Setter Salver event.

This is an annual competition played between the Seniors’ committees of all the clubs with whom they hold friendly matches.

It includes Clubs from across the County, from Saunton in the North, to Boringdon Park in the West.

The Salver was donated 42 years ago by the then Downes captain.

Downes Crediton cannot win the Salver itself, this honour goes to our visiting clubs.

However, Downes can win one of the wine prizes!

For the third year in a row the home team had the best score, but the battle for the Salver was a very close affair. The teams from Exeter and Libbaton both scored 80 points, with Exeter being declared winners, by virtue of a better last 6 holes.

The two nearest the pins were won by Holsworthy and Libbaton.

The day concluded with an excellent meal, and some very necessary beverages at the 19th hole.

On Friday, August 14, the Downes Seniors held their annual Captain’s Away Day.

Seniors Captain David Cousins chose Oake Manor, a course the club doesn’t play that often.

It proved to be an extremely popular choice with 44 Senior members attending.

The Gerry Mannell Trophy for Division One players was won by Peter Blinkhorn, and the Colin Smith Trophy for Division Two players was won by Paul Dorothy for the second year in a row.

A good time was had by all, with numerous other prizes for nearest the pin, longest drive, best team etc.

Golf was preceded by a bacon roll and coffee, and followed by steak and ale pie and chips, so everyone went home satisfied whether they had won or not.

A few other results from this week. The Ladies Stableford on Thursday was won by Wing Wong with 39pts.

On Saturday the Ray Shire Trophy, a team event, was won by the team of Chris Drew, Neil Baker and Gary Spragg.
