GEARY CUP FINAL

SPREYTON 1 - AMORY GREEN ROVERS 0

UNDER the glorious sunshine at Crediton United’s Lords Meadow ground on Tuesday, May 15, both teams were set for the biggest game of the season.

The first 15 minutes was end-to-end stuff with Amory pressing Spreyton and creating chances.

Twenty minutes in Chris Down broke free and was one-on-one with the ‘keeper to finish deliciously offside - no goal!

The pressure and tempo continued with Spreyton throughout the early stages of the game but we couldn’t find that special moment we needed, the back four coped superbly with the sun in their eyes in the first half!

With 10 minutes to go before the break Amory were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box in a dangerous position, however it was put well over the bar - 0-0 at the break.

With tactical changes manager Mark Baitup changed the formation to a 3-5-2 to help support Chris Down up top and within minutes of the restart we had our first chance of the half with Chris Down through on goal. However his first touch took away from him for the ‘keeper to come and collect.

Five minutes later Baker found himself in behind the defence to take a poor first touch but ended on the edge of the six-yard box to dink over the ‘keeper and a roar from the Spreyton fans on the opposite side however was in despair seconds later to release, it had hit the side netting!

In the 70th minute Spreyton found themselves with acres of space on the left-hand side and Josh Phillips bombed forward to put in a cross that was deflected out for a corner!

The Spreys positioned themselves in the box for the ball to come over and who else but Liam Ward to leap like a salmon above the Amory defence - 1-0 to Spreyton!

The tempo was with us five minutes later. Tactical changes were made and on came Luke Herbert for Baker to protect the win!

Chances started to go Amory’s way as Spreyton started to tire with Darren and Shane Heale having chances within minutes of each other, but nothing was beating Tim Cockman!

With eight minutes to go on came Charlie Caddy to burst some energy into the boys to bring it home! Amory pressed but nothing was coming off for them!

Full-time: Spreyton 1-Amory 0, the bench erupted onto the pitch and the gaffa and assistant ran to all the players - absolute scenes for the boys that had just achieved the league and cup double!

Credit where credit is due, Amory Green Rovers had a fantastic game and Matt Mitchell (Amory manager) should be proud of everything the team has achieved this season. Also a massive thank you to everyone who came to support us.

What an achievement for the lads, not only tonight but for the whole season. To be 15 points behind Bradninch Town in March to be crowned League and Cup champions in our first season is phenomenal at any level of football, to be unbeaten in 13 games is an incredible run.
