LAST Saturday, December 6, saw a depleted football programme in the Exeter district because of the terrible weather.

Only three matches were played, one being Sandford Football Club’s home game against Chagford at the George V Playing Field.

On a heavy pitch, with rain and wind, both sides tried hard to play good football.

Chagford started the brighter of the two sides forcing "ford" keeper Charles Headley into two or three brilliant saves which kept the scores level.

Then a Sandford attack led to a corner from which centre back Tyler Morgan Hugget scored, 1-0.

With continuing heavy rain and wind the game then went to a midfield battle with not many chances either end until the 40th minute when Chagford equalised to make it 1-1.

Half time arrived with teams all square.

The second half started the same way until two substitutions by the Sandford managers Shaun Hawkins and Keiron Stanbury proved decisive.

They brought on Tudor Morgan Hugget on left wing and Chris Hawkes on the right.

First of all Tudor got the ball, ran down the wing then cut back onto his right foot and hit a shot across which the keeper stood no chance with as it sailed into the far corner, 2-1.

Chagford began to tire on the heavy ground, the home side with Shaun Stapleton and Tom Cornwall outstanding in midfield.

Another Sandford attack saw the ball cleared only for Chris Hawkes to hit a shot which went over the keeper and into the net, 3-1.

Another three points for Sandford as they press on towards the top of the league. That's nine out of 10 wins now.

Next Saturday, weather permitting, Sandford play Tedburn at home, KO 2.15pm. Well played to all the team.
