EXETER UNITED 1 - SPREYTON 6
A ROUGHLY tough game in the semi-final of the Geary Cup on Sunday, April 22, saw Spreyton play away against a physical opponent, however we persisted and it paid off.
Exeter United started the game faster than Spreyton, breaking into the box in the first 10 minutes and with a striker down, a penalty was awarded and converted to make it 1-0.
Spreyton settled and started to play their football and 10 minutes later Chris Down broke into the box after a lovely ball over from Liam Ward and struck the ball beautifully into the bottom corner.
Ten minutes after that Spreyton pumped a ball into the box but it was headed away. Matt Baker flicked the ball to Chris Down at the back post for his header to be saved and Liam Ward flicked the ball into the net to make it 2-1 at half-time.
At the start of the second half it was almost as if Exeter United ran out of steam. Spreyton ran absolutely wild with the ball being flicked over to Liam Ward in the box and the ‘keeper completely wiped him out resulting in a penalty.
Chris Down stepped up and, you guessed it, he notched again 3-1. On 55 minutes in, the ball was pumped into the box by Koehan King and Chris Down flicked a lovely header with his whole body facing away from goal to make it 4-1.
With 20 minutes to go Mike Hows got the ball on the ball on the edge of the box for arguably the goal of the season right into the top corner, 5-1!
Luke Herbert was running down the wing with 10 minutes to go and passed the ball into Kieran Statton who completed the score list with a cheeky finish past the ‘keeper.
Jake Herbert was unfortunately sent off with seven minutes remaining, however the defence for Spreyton was first class and never looked like we would concede other than the penalty.
Tim Cockman made some comfortable saves and Will Hawking and Luke Honeychurch made some first class interceptions. Luke Herbert and Tyler Cole, I do believe are still running around the Exwick 3G ground!
Man of the match for Spreyton was Luke Honeychurch.
We now go into our first final in our first season. A fantastic effort by all and we achieved what we set out to do.
Matt Baker
