A TOUGH cup draw saw Spreyton FC play away at Newton Poppleford on Sunday afternoon (April 8) in the quarter-final of the Geary Cup.

Goals came from Chris Down and a Matt Baker brace saw Spreyton advance to the semi-final where Exeter United await.

Spreyton made a great start when a deep corner saw Will Hawkin head across goal for Matt Baker to drive home.

Spreyton kept up the pressure and Chris Down picked up a threaded ball down the right-hand side to smash a high finish into the roof of the net for 2-0.

An under-strength Pop side battled hard under tough conditions as the pitch cut up. Spreyton made a few changes with Brad Lovatt and Jake and Luke Herbert coming on for Charlie Caddie, Ko King and Kieron Statton.

It was Jake Herbert who picked up a loose ball in midfield, won the second ball and threaded a great ball to Matt Baker who went past the ‘keeper and slotted home a deserved third goal to bring a first semi-final appearance in the first year of existence for Spreyton.

Man of the match for Spreyton was Tyler Cole with another solid performance who provided calm defending and used the ball well.
