SATURDAY, January 13 saw Sandford First Team entertain league high flyers Alphington Firsts and finally get the second half of their season going at the George V Playing Field in Sandford.

On a grey and dismal afternoon, the home side couldn't field a full strength side which was unfortunate as they had beaten the visitors before Christmas and they would be looking for revenge.

From the start Alphington were playing neat football with the home side playing catch up, occasionally breaking out of defence and going on the attack.

Pressure was building on the home side and after 33 minutes Alphington took the lead with a powerful header from a corner.

The away side continued to push forward and Sandford keeper Jeb Mussel was kept on his toes making a string of saves.

Half-time arrived with the away side leading 0-1.

The second half started with the home side playing up the slope towards the village still holding out and making the visitors fight for everything.

It wasn't until the 65th minute that the visitors increased their lead, 0-2.

Sandford were still fighting but were tiring fast and in the final 10 minutes Alphington increased their lead to 0-4 at the final whistle.

A valiant effort from the home side.

This Saturday the First Team are away to Okehampton Seconds, kick-off 2.15pm.

The Second Team travelled to Otterton who were Third in the league and Otterton beat them 5-1.

This week they are home to Exeter Royals, kick-off 2.15pm. Good luck to both teams.
