AT the Devon Rotary Youth Games held at Okehampton on Sunday, July 3, team Mid Devon came a credible fourth overall, fighting off tough competition from last year’s winners and runners-up, Teignbridge and Torbay, who finished second and third this year behind overall winners, West Devon.

The children from Mid Devon excelled and all had a fantastic day at what was reported to be one of the best Games so far, particularly as the weather was so good.

Gold medals were won by the boys badminton and U16 girls football teams, silver medals were won by the U14 girls football team, and bronze medals were won by the girls netball and girls badminton teams.

There was also an individual bronze in the triathlon (a tough competition involving a 600 metre swim, a 4,500 metre cycle – on grass – and a 3,000 metre run).

This was the first triathlon team Mid Devon had entered in the Games for a few years and all the children who took part were said to be a credit to the overall team for their commitment and hard slog.

Praise and congratulations went to all the teams for entering into the spirit of the Games, whether winners or not, particularly as team Mid Devon were runners-up in the Fair Play award.

Thanks also went to the volunteers who support, train and manage the teams which took part in the Devon Rotary Youth Games.
