WITH two winter months now gone we would normally be looking forward to drier weather soon and a return to playing football to catch up on our fixtures.

As the earliest restart date has been set for March 13, that would give us a maximum of 11 weeks to fulfil the remaining 24 of our scheduled 38 league games to play before the end of season cut-off date of May 31.

If all went to plan this might be a possibility meaning we play two games a week for the 11 weeks – one on Saturday and one midweek plus one game on each of the three Bank Holiday Mondays coming in the spring time.

That would be 11 x 2 + 2 = 24 – Simple!

Unfortunately it will be very doubtful as that won’t take into consideration further bad weather to come no doubt in the Spring.

So we have a plan! As Covid vaccinations are now being ramped up we will fairly soon be including over 65’s in the Lords Meadow Sports centre “jab” queues, the answer is to decide all the outstanding games with only players over 65 years of age as they will be immune to spreading the virus again!!!

Maybe nowadays most of these players might struggle to actually run around a football field so the answer is to get the league to play “Virtual” football matches on Zoom!

By coincidence I have a photo – see attached – of the 1975-6 team – 45 years ago, which I think would qualify as all the players would now be over 65 and have a very good chance of doing well, possibly winning the current South West Peninsula League.

To be honest there is very little chance of us completing the current season and unless matches can be played under strict virus-free conditions many people think that either the league be abandoned for the second year running or perhaps, my thought, a mini league Cup competition introduced to at least get football played through the final month or so. But then I’m a compulsive optimist.
