AS the short mat bowls season draws to an end, Bow hosted one final competition before players take a well-earned rest for the summer.

Saturday, June 7 saw 12 teams from north to south Devon assemble in Bow Village Hall for a day of bowling.

The competition, held to raise funds for the village hall, saw the teams split into two groups of six bowling round-robin matches played throughout the morning and into the early afternoon.

Playing across three mats, each team played five rapid fire games of 35 minutes or eight ends.

At the end of the round-robin stage, the top team from each group went forward into an eight-end final with no time limit.

After a hectic day, it was Christow and Exeter Nomads who emerged as the two finalists.

Fortunes in the final swung to and fro as Exeter Nomads initially took a comfortable lead before an exciting fight back by Christow.

Going into the last end, it was all to play for with Christow leading by two shots.

However, Exeter Nomads kept their heads, winning the final end by three shots to take the final by a single shot.

Both teams received plaques for their efforts as the day wrapped up around 5pm.

The day’s play was organised and overseen by Bow’s county and national player Nick Wyatt.

Meanwhile, a magnificent team from the village hall provided players with breakfast, lunch and refreshments during the day, as well as running a raffle with prizes donated by the players.

Money raised will go towards the village hall and a project to refurbish the hall toilet facilities.

Bow Short Mat Bowls Club meets in Bow Village Hall every Wednesday evening from September to June at 7.30pm.

New or returning players always welcome. Come along and give bowls a go.
