THE Charity Golf Day on Friday, June 14 at Downes Crediton Golf Club raised more than £2,800 for Save the Children. The weather was kind and the 23 teams who took part in this Four Ball team event fought it out for prize food hampers in five different categories: Best Overall, Best Ladies, Best Gentleman, Best Visitors and Best Mixed. The Best Overall team, with an excellent score of 91, was Ollie Greenslade, June Mitchell and Betty and Alan Willey. Best Ladies team, with 88 points, were Crediton golfers, Sue Sparham, Annet Coles, Viv Jordan and Norma Barry. Organisers, Paul and Judith Ezard, emphasised that the event could not have been such a success without the support of special friends and the members and staff at Downes. They also say a big "thank you" to the following local businesses: Quickes Traditional Ltd, Edwin Tucker and Sons, Ernest Jackson, Revive Hair & Beauty, Olivers, J D Wetherspoon, Marstons, Tesco, South West Highways, Brittany Ferries, St James' Place Wealth Management, WBM Groundworks and Rangemoors.
At the prize giving, Judith announced that she was going to Liberia, West Africa, very soon, to see how some of the money that is raised for Save the Children is spent. Save the Children work in 120 countries across the world. They save children's lives, fight for their rights and help them to fulfil their potential.
A major fundraising campaign is to be launched by Save the Children in July, to raise £500,000 to build six new health facilities in some of the poorest and most remote health districts across two counties in Liberia – Montserrado and Margibi. Judith will be flying to Monrovia for a week on June 29 and has pledged to give talks about the visit on her return to raise awareness of the problems that the people living and working in Liberia face. Local groups who would like to book a free talk for later in the year can telephone Judith on 01363 772502.
