Campaigners oppose planned wind turbine

THE story appeared in the "Courier" on Friday, January 16, issue 1016.

Opponents of a planned wind turbine at Manns Newton Farm, near Coldridge gathered at the farm entrance to make their feelings known to a visiting planning inspector.

The application was refused by Mid Devon District Council in November 2013 and an appeal was launched by Murex Energy Ltd in January 2014, which is now being considered by the inspector.

Many people, including the Local Planning Authority and Taw Turbine Action Group, feel the limited benefits are far outweighed by the potential harm to the landscape and visual impact. And that harm could be caused to the setting of the heritage assets.

What you told us ..........

Aesthetically, they are not a problem – but, they are a waste as half the time they are not working. They are done on a "wrong footing" – the people who put them in claim they produce a certain amount of electricity, but they only work when the wind is blowing. We need a more reliable source like tidal power – we have tides twice a day.

During the course of my job, I have spoken to someone from North Tawton about the effects of wind turbines. They apparently give off a low level of noise, which can disturb people's sleep. I understand there are currently noise problems at Fullabrook, Barnstaple.

I look at what wind turbines cost and I wonder is it worth it? They do affect people living nearby as well as birds. We should be using the sea for tidal power. At the end of the day we pay for it with green taxes.

I am against wind turbines. I don't think they produce enough energy for the damage they do. They do not produce the amount of energy they promise.
