FOR more than 30 years Harvey Moore was in business in Crediton, mainly in the motor trade. Harvey died, aged 67, after Christmas. His funeral service was held at Crediton Parish Church.
Harvey was born and brought up in Kendal in the Lake District. He became an apprentice coach builder, then worked as a panel beater and sprayer in Kendal.
He met his wife, Christine, who was born and grew up in Crediton, while on holiday in Yorkshire and they were married in February, 1963 at Crediton Parish Church, in the snow. It was snowy when his funeral service was held, too.
Their first home together was in Kendal where Harvey ran his own business in car sales and repairs. In 1970 they moved to Crediton, and Harvey worked at Reed's Garage on Exeter Road, where Alexander Court now stands.
While working there Harvey met Melvyn Trayhurn and together they set up Lords Meadow Motors on that estate and built the showroom and workshop that is still there.
In 1995 Harvey retired, but that did not suit him and he joined his son Wayne as Moore and Moore Carpet and Uphostery Cleaning, doing domestic and contract work, a business which is still continuing.
For many years he was a member of Crediton Lodge Loyal Order of Moose. He loved photography and he and Christine enjoyed holidays abroad and with their caravan.
Ten years ago Harvey had a heart bypass operation, and never looked back afterwards, leading a normal, healthy life. Harvey was taken ill on Boxing Day with a stroke and his death came as a huge shock.
He had a great sense of humour, nearly always joking. At his funeral service the Rev Nigel Guthrie said he was kind, too. Harvey often ended up helping older people out with a little job while he went on his cleaning jobs.
With his wife Christine, Harvey leaves four children, Sharon, Wayne, Mark and Jamie, seven grandchildren and a brother Tony who still lives in Kendal.
Donations at his funeral service were for the British Heart Foundation and the Stroke Association. Donations may be made through LeRoy Funeral Service M Wreford and Sons, 94-95 High Street, Crediton, EX17 3LB.
