MID Devon District Scouts has a new Lead Volunteer, Helen Derbyshire, who’s been part of Mid Devon Scouts for over 20 years and would like to use Volunteer Week 2026 (June 1 to 7) to say a BIG ‘THANK YOU’ to all the volunteers across the District and ask you to volunteer with Scouts.

Why?

Helen said: “Volunteering with Scouts has a positive impact on the lives of young people.

“Helping them develop skills, learn new things, and grow in confidence which is incredibly rewarding. A total of 35% of young people who take part in Scouts are more likely to report excellent general health at the age of 50 (compared to those who don’t). It would be great to increase that percentage, can you think of ways it could be achieved? Come and volunteer with Scouts.”

She added: “Volunteering is a fantastic way of becoming more involved in your local community. Scouts is a great place to meet new people, make connections, and contribute to the well-being of your community and give something back.

“Volunteering with Scouts provides opportunities to develop new skills or build on existing ones. For example, you might learn leadership, organisational, or communication skills. All skills that are transferable to a prospective employer.

“Volunteering with Scouts is FUN. Adults have as much fun as young people. You might enjoy working with children, planning activities, or participating in games and adventures, how about travelling abroad?

“Have you got a skill or hobby you would like to share?

“Are you the person who enjoys administration, financial planning and governance?

“Volunteering is as flexible as you need and in return Scouts will provide all the training needed to fulfil your role.”

Mid Devon Scouts meet regularly in Chulmleigh, Crediton, Holsworthy, North Tawton, Okehampton, Sandford, South Zeal and Tedburn & Cheriton.
