SUPERVISOR Sue Lee is set to retire after eight years at Crediton Library.
She will do her last shift on Friday, May 30 before heading off on a six-week caravan trip around France with her husband.
Sue instituted some big changes during her tenure. She set up the community garden at the back of the library, which features decking, planters, a water bath and two bespoke benches handmade in Crediton Town Square by local people.
“It’s opened up a lovely area for people to sit and meet, and in nice weather we do ‘Bounce and Rhyme’ out there,” she said.
“We’ve got a lovely view of Newcombes Meadow. People are always welcome to pick the herbs that are in the vegetable beds and water the plants!”
Sue also introduced the food larder and fridge at the library, in partnership with Sustainable Crediton.
They are stocked with food that would otherwise have gone to waste. Members of the public can take whatever they like for free.
The project saw as much as 12 and a half tonnes of food from one supermarket alone saved from being thrown away between March 2022 and October 2023.
“There are about 30 Sustainable Crediton volunteers who pick up from different shops around town food that's a day out of date,” Sue explained.
“It started as an environmental initiative, and it's only since prices have spiralled that it's really become useful to supplement people's income.”
Sue has thanked the staff and customers for their support throughout her time at the library, saying she has “really loved” her job and it has been “so much fun”.
She has also extended her thanks to the Friends of Crediton Library for their fundraising efforts over the years and for helping provide refreshments at events.
