EIGHT years ago as part of the Crediton Festival, a number of history panels were created by Crediton Area History and Museum Society.

From these has come a 40-page book which went on sale for the first time at a coffee morning held on Saturday, November 25 in the Museum on the ground floor of the Old Town Hall on the corner of Searle Street and High Street in Crediton.

Its author was Sandra Cooper, until September CAHMS chairman. Crediton Through the Ages is part of the Crediton History Series, sponsored by Crediton Chamber of Commerce.

Sandra says this book is “just a glimpse at some of the happenings in Crediton over the years”.

She sets out the geology, evidence of the earliest settlements, the field patterns which still have their history on the ground, the buildings, fires, war, then more modern days with roads and the turnpike, the cinema, factories and other work, with the church and education the strong thread running through.

It is a fascinating little book, ideal for anyone with a curiosity about the town and where it came from - its pride in having been a market town when Exeter was “a furzy down.”

The coffee morning raised about £150 and book sales came to £112.

Sandra’s seat as chairman was taken by John Heal at the annual meeting in September. He was among those who had contributed much to the book.

John said their farming exhibition this summer had been the most successful since the museum opened in 2009.

Copies of the new booklet are available at Crediton Community Bookshop and the Crediton Courier offices.
