CREDITON'S local MP has pledged his support for a new play area at Newcombes Meadow after meeting with local resident Ruth Preater-Gillard, who is a member of the Newcombes Community Group.

The Mid Devon District Council-owned play area is in need of an upgrade.

In addition to Mel's support, the group has also received support from Crediton Mid Devon District Councillor Martin Binks, who is lobbying for some of the town's Section 106 funding (contributions made by developers to local projects) to be spent on the project and for Mid Devon District Council to also commit additional resources of its own.

These two avenues should raise around £135,000.

Sponsorship from local businesses, Crediton Town Council and other avenues is also being sought.

Ruth explained: "We have had more than 300 responses to our survey for play area ideas so far.

"We welcome Mel's interest and offer of support in helping us to fulfil our aim of updating the play equipment in Newcombes Meadow."

Mel added: "Upgrading Newcombes Meadow into a brand new destination play area would be a real asset to the local community.

"I have offered to help, where possible, to support funding bids and urge local residents who want to see the scheme succeed to get involved with the consultation process."

The Newcombes Community Group recently distributed consultation leaflets, concentrating on schools, nurseries and children's groups, to gain ideas about the design for the scheme and is keen to see completed forms returned.
