MORE than 600 people responded to the Crediton Heart Project’s survey about their ambitious plans to build a community arts venue on the edge of Newcombes Meadow.

The proposed venue, known as the Park House, would be built on the site of the Union Road toilet block, offering theatre, cinema, dance, comedy, music as well as a café and space for other community activities.

Earlier this year the Heart Project commissioned an architect feasibility study, which concluded it would be possible to build a 300-seat professionally equipped theatre on the site. The charity then ran a public consultation, which finished at the end of October, to gauge enthusiasm for the project.

“We were overwhelmed by the response to our survey,” the Heart Project said in a statement. “Over 600 people completed the survey telling us what they might use the space for, which is an incredible show of support for the project.

“Lots of people said they looked forward to coming to theatre, dance, film and more. Over 50% of people said that, when open, they would join the team and volunteer, which is hugely encouraging. And a similar number said they would plan to visit the cafe once a week or more.

“Lots of people raised the sticky issue of parking, very understandably. Others were worried about the impact on other venues in the town, and we appreciate people taking the time to raise these thoughtful points.

“Working closely with the supportive Town and District councils, we will look for money to take us on to the next stage - building the case for a planning bid and starting the wider fundraising process.

“In this very challenging financial environment, it’s going to be a tough job. Don’t expect news too quickly! We will keep you informed as and when there is news, and we’re grateful for your patience as we take these careful steps forward.

“In the meantime the Crediton Heart Project will continue working with our partners to make creative events and activities happen in our town.

“Our popular Kick Start Art challenge will start in January and an expanded Arts Festival next summer, all of which continue to show the energy and creativity in our community.

“Thanks to everyone who took part in this survey, your input has taken us one step closer to bringing a large performance space to the town. We will keep you in touch with developments.”

The Park House would include a flexible performance space, with seating for 300, rooms for other community activities and a beautiful café opening onto the park.

The Heart Project says it would provide a welcoming and inclusive place to meet, learn and create together in the heart of our town.

It adds: “The Park House could offer amazing opportunities for local and national performance groups and bring many more events to our area, including theatre, cinema, dance, comedy and live music.

“It would transform our park and regenerate our town centre.”

The Crediton Heart Project is a volunteer-led charity, working to keep the heart in our communities.
