MID Devon residents have been going from strength-to-strength recycling at home; and now Mid Devon District Council wants to give people the opportunity to recycle when they are out and about as well.

A trial of split recycling bins in town centres at Tiverton, Cullompton and Crediton.

Following feedback from residents who suggested the idea, the council is keen to see how the bins will perform and whether a high level of uncontaminated recycling can be achieved.

The new bins are split-use; one side for general litter and the other for cans and plastic.

It is hoped that the bins will be used properly so the Street Scene team will closely monitor their usage. Once the waste is collected, there’s no opportunity to sort through the contents before being taken for disposal.

It’s hoped that the tonnage of recyclable material produced from the bins will contribute to the Council’s recycling rate, thereby reducing disposal charges.

The Leader of the Council, Councillor Clive Eginton, said: “We are very keen to trial this scheme, it has had much public support and will provide a consistent message about the importance of recycling. We all have a responsibility to keep our streets and countryside clean and litter-free”.
