ON Saturday, September 8, a group of friends and neighbours of Peter Craske will be walking one of the “Tarka Line Walks” in memory of the author of that volume, Peter Craske, who sadly died just before Christmas 2017.

The walk will be from Yeoford Railway Station to Copplestone Railway Station via the villages of Colebrooke and Coleford.

The group will stop for lunch at the New Inn in Coleford (a favourite of Peter’s) where Peter’s wife, Deborah, will present the landlords with a framed photograph of Peter and his four footed companion "Scrumpy" to commemorate the event.

Peter Craske, had been a much-loved resident of South Tawton since 2001 and until his death.

Peter had been a “Devon Boy” long before this most recent stay in our county, and love for Devon is what brought him back here after years working in the USA.

He also loved railways and often quoted his experiences as a young boy travelling alone from London to Morchard Road Station to be met by his favourite Aunts with whom he invariably spent his summer holidays.

A keen walker with his dogs, Peter determined to combine his loves of Devon and of railways by devising, researching and documenting some 22 walks based around the stations on the Tarka Line, which runs from Exeter to Barnstaple.

His first book appeared in 2009 and was followed in 2011 by a second volume detailing 22 more walks.

These two volumes were combined and, with the addition of 16 extra walks, the latest (2013) edition of “Tarka Line Walks” – gives a choice of 60 walks from/to stations on the line, varying in length and difficulty.

At a memorial service held for Peter in February this year the decision to enjoy a walk to honour Peter’s memory was born.
