MATTHEW O’Connell is leading the way in working with landowners to capture carbon through tree planting.
Matthew who is the owner of Sylvawood Agriculture Ltd and a project developer for the Woodland Carbon Code is a former pupil of QE has nearly 30 years experience in the tree and agricultural industries.
He identifies marginal land that could be used to plant woodlands and create a new income source for the landowner.
Site maps, carbon capture estimates and soil conditions are assessed by Matthew
who will then register the proposed project with the Woodland Carbon Code and look at the sale price of the carbon with either the private market or with a new Government scheme, the Woodland Carbon Guarantee.
This new scheme is held as an auction and will guarantee income from carbon until 2055.
Matthew agrees that planting new woodland is a long term commitment. However, with the replacement of BPS with ELM’S, this could be an excellent opportunity to earn extra money from carbon sequestration.
Planting trees on marginal land will also make a real difference to our environment and our natural habitat.
