A 77-YEAR-OLD man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder this week following the death of a 74-year-old woman.

Police attended an address at Poughill, which is five miles from Crediton, on Tuesday, March 13, following a "concern for welfare" telephone call about a woman at the address.

Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Local residents expressed their shock that such an incident could happen in their community.

They also commented on the large number of police officers guarding the house for almost 48 hours.

The man was later released on police bail until Tuesday, April 10.

The woman’s next of kin have been informed.
