ST LUKES Church, Posbury biennial Country Fair was held at Downes House, Crediton by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Henry Parker and record crowds of hundreds of people went along. There were many attractions, in fact, something for all the family. It was particularly interesting to many as a group of local steam enthusiasts laid a length of track on the lower lawn in front of the house to provide train rides to the young and young at heart between two temporary stations. There was also a static display of steam engines, trains and boats and the chance to enjoy a ride in a cart pulled behind a miniature steam engine up and down the driveway to the house. The organising committee invited local community groups to attend the fair and there were also many craft and food producers in attendance. A family dog show, sponsored by St Boniface Veterinary Clinic, saw nearly 70 dogs entered in 12 classes, including handsomest dog, prettiest bitch, best party trick and best pair. Many people took their pets along to be judged and rosettes were awarded to the first three places. Crediton Fire Station, Crediton Police and the towns co-responder vehicle were among those who went along. The programme also included the appearance of a magician. Many people enjoyed lunches and cream teas in between browsing the stalls and dog show classes. Fiona Mortimer, chairman, St Lukes Church, Posbury, thanked all those who helped to make the Country Fair a success. She particularly thanked Henry and Susan Parker, the steam enthusiasts, St Boniface Veterinary Clinic and members of the congregation and friends who supported the small committee by stewarding the car park, baking and selling cakes, serving refreshments, providing the public address system or helping to set up and clear up afterwards. She also thanked all the people of Crediton and surrounding parishes for supporting the event in such large numbers. Alan Quick
