CHULMLEIGH College is celebrating another fine year of GCSE results following the release of the Department for Education’s Compare Schools search tool on Thursday, October 16.

Schools in England are rated on a number of metrics and once again this year, Chulmleigh pupils have scored the highest across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset across the government’s challenging English Baccalaureate measure (EBacc) for a comprehensive school.

The average point score, or grade, across the English, Mathematics, Two Sciences, Geography or History and a Modern Foreign Language was 5.24 at Chulmleigh College, the highest of any secondary school on the South West peninsula.

More pupils at Chulmleigh are entered for this challenging suite of subjects than in any other school – a huge 87% of pupils in 2025. A total of 41% of pupils in Year 11 in England were entered for the English Baccalaureate in 2025.

“We want the very best for our pupils,” explained Headteacher, Mr Payne, “and it is such a joy to read that our pupils have performed so strongly.

“The very best we can give our pupils is a broad, balanced and demanding curriculum that prepares them fully for their futures. We know that Chulmleigh pupils thrive in post-16 education because of the academic diet they receive from our school.

“The results recently released validate the excellent work that takes place in our classrooms, in the exam hall and at the homes of our pupils. In this way, the results reflect the wonderful partnership that exists between the school and the families we serve.”

A spokesperson added that high expectations and standards sit at the very heart of the educational ethos at Chulmleigh College and in a year with no progress scores for parents to assess school performance, the English Baccalaureate remains a fantastic endorsement of the rigour, challenge and success at Chulmleigh College.

Queen Elizabeth’s School in Crediton also did well, attaining an EBacc average point score of 4.29, Okehampton College achieving 3.71 average.
