CREDITON-BASED charity The Folklore Library and Archive is looking for curious people who enjoy a cuppa and who would like to learn more about what it means to manage a heritage collection.
Every month, the charity will be hosting a social “chataloguing” session at Clover’s Café, where people can meet, have a coffee, and interact with some of the Folklore Library’s heritage materials and artefacts.
“Part of our charitable aim is to make our collections available online, and that involves a lot of behind-the-scenes work,” said Tracey Norman, the charity’s project manager.
“We’re also aware that a lot of people locally are living in social isolation. Hopefully, by offering sessions like this, we can provide company for people who need it.”
The chataloguing sessions will take place between 2pm and 4pm in Clover’s Café in the High Street on the second Thursday of the month, beginning on July 9.
“As well as having a drink and a chat, we’re also going to be offering people the chance to help us with some of our ‘back office’ cataloguing – hence the name!” continued Tracey.
“We need help with a whole range of tasks, such as indexing journals, and identifying people and places in local photos.
“This work is vital because it means we can improve the quality of the online information we provide, and makes our collections better and easier to access.”
No experience is necessary, as Tracey will guide attendees through any tasks they choose to do.
“The important part is that people find a welcoming and safe space,” she said.
“The cataloguing aspect is entirely voluntary, but I do hope people will be curious and want to have a go.”
Space at the sessions is limited and will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis – please email Tracey at [email protected] to reserve your place.
