THE annual Sandford Flower Show, held at the Parish Hall on Bank Holiday Monday, was again a huge success with a large number of people attending.

The standard of the exhibits was very high and there were more entries than last year in a variety of classes including fruit and vegetable, floral, novelty vegetables, floral art, cookery, photography and homecraft and children’s classes.

The main sponsor of the show was Mole Avon Trading Ltd with 37 other local businesses and individuals also sponsoring the event.

The cup winners were:

The J Crooke Perpetual Cup (most points in vegetables, fruit and flowers) – Dave Friendship; The Nick Cann Perpetual Cup (most points in vegetables and fruit) – Dave Friendship; The Flower Show Committee Perpetual Cup (most points on flower classes)– Paul Ezard; The Leon Parish Shield (best pot plant) – Doris Friendship; Meadowside Garage Perpetual Cup (heaviest pumpkin) – Dave Friendship; The Garden News Perpetual Shield (most points in vegetables and flowers) - Dave Friendship; A Perpetual Shield (for the greatest number of points in floral art classes) – Elaine Stanlake; The L Allin Perpetual Silver Cupbest exhibit in floral art) - Elaine Stanlake; The Women’s Institute Rose Bowl (most number of points in cookery classes)– Hazel Cheriton; The H Pennington Perpetual Cup (most number of points in homecraft classes)– Lorna Cheriton; The Margaret Tucker Shield (best exhibit in photography) – Charlie Werner; The Somerville Cup (most points in photography classes) – Charlie Werner; A Perpetual Cup (most points in primary school age section) – Ruby Hearbson; A Perpetual Cup (most points in young persons section) – Sara Glass; The Margaret Tucker Cup (most points in young persons photography section) – Sara Glass.

The prizes were also presented for the Sandford Best Gardens and the Best Allotments competitions.

The Flower Show chairman, Tony Wright, thanked all the sponsors, without whom he said “the event would not be possible.”

He also thanked everyone who helped or attended the flower show.
