TIME flies and September marks five years since The Box opened its doors!
It was a strange time when Plymouth’s major museum, art gallery and archive welcomed its first visitors – more than five months later than planned due to Covid 19 – but it’s gone on to win awards, display groundbreaking exhibitions, host a programme of popular events, and welcome over one million visitors.
If you went there a while ago, or you still haven’t been, why not plan a visit soon?
There are lots of brilliant reasons to spend time at The Box whatever the weather or the time of year.
With free entry, permanent galleries filled with highlights from the art, human history, maritime history, natural history, film, photographic and archive collections, a great onsite shop, research facilities, and the brilliant Box Kitchen and Bar with its tasty menu, it’s always a good time to go along!
Opening hours are 10am-5pm, Tuesday to Sunday and there’s no need to book.
If that wasn’t enough there are lots of things to look forward to over the coming months as well.
These include Remember Respond Resist – a major exhibition which is part of the UK/Poland Season 2025 – and which features the work of 22 different artists including Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry and Turner Prize nominee Goshka Macuga (from October 4, 2025).
If you’re keen to discover even more there are monthly behind the scenes tours that take you behind closed doors and give you an insight into the stores and basement, monthly “Bitesize” talks that reveal more about the exhibitions on display, free weekly storytelling sessions for little ones and a range of seasonal events including holiday workshops, Halloween and – dare we say it – Christmas!
