A CREDITON woman who was struck by a lorry last night (Thursday, July 16) in Crediton High Street, sustained some serious injuries but is in a stable condition in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.
Tania Hayman (59), was walking home across the High Street near Lloyd’s Bank with her five-years-old Jack Russell Lily, at about 4.30pm, when the incident happened.
The lorry was travelling down the High Street in the direction of Exeter at the time.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and the A377 road was closed by police from Market Street to St Saviour’s Way.
Buses, lorries and other traffic was being diverted by police.
Tania was treated at the scene by paramedics and cared for by co-responders from Crediton Fire Station.
A Devon Air Ambulance hovered over the scene but it was not required to land.
She was placed on a stretcher and cared for in an ambulance at the scene for some time.
The area was sealed off and the road was closed for more than three hours to allow accident investigation to take place.
Tania’s mother, Adele Cox, told the “Courier” today, Friday, July 17: “I saw Tania at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital last night, after a wait of three hours.
“She has many fractures, a fractured wrist, shoulder and hip and broken the orbital bone around the eye.
"She is obviously battered and bruised and has a very large black eye.
"She was transferred to Derriford Hospital and is awaiting an operation tomorrow.
"We hope she will be well enough to come back to the R D and E Hospital next week."
DOG IS FINE
Adele confirmed that when the incident occurred, her dog was cared for by two witnesses.
She said: "I would like to thank the two girls who looked after Lily, Tania’s Jack Russell.
"They found the address tag on her collar and took her home and let Tania’s husband Tony know about the accident.
"Tony took Lily to the vet this morning and she was given the all-clear."
Adele added: "It will take Tania a while to recover and hope she will be back home again soon."
