THE committee members of Shobrooke Friendly Club were busy in the afternoon of August 15 preparing the sandwiches and cakes for a Summer Tea in the Village Hall which saw 33 members and friends from Crediton and surrounding areas attending.
Everyone, was sitting quietly chatting, when into the hall burst Christopher Lee, dressed in the garb one would have expected a countrified gent to wear during the early part of the 20th century.
Complaining that having just walked from Crediton, his feet were killing him and that he’d love a dish o’ tea. Christopher then went on to tell several amusing stories of his “family”, with more than a smattering of Devon dialect.
One particular story about Granny and her Christmas tea, and how she ended up accidentally shooting the cat had everyone in stitches.
He ended his performance by reading or reciting a couple of very funny poems, again much in the Devon vernacular. At the end Christopher was warmly applauded, and thanked by Chairman, Jack Fey for entertaining us in this manner.
In addition to Christopher, the Club had booked further entertainment with a small band called Ukulele Crazy.
There should have been three members of this group, but unfortunately one member was in hospital. Nevertheless the leader, Brian Poole, (not to be confused with the Brian Poole of Tremeloes fame), with his assistant, Emily, provided wonderful entertainment.
Although billed as Ukulele, the entertainment was mostly on banjos, with a good selection of the songs by George Formby. Quite a few of those present were happily singing along.
Brian then produced a guitar and sang some Country and Western Songs. To add to the variety Emily produced a small steel drum and gave us a flavour of the Caribbean with calypso music.
At the end of their excellent performance they were warmly applauded by the members, and invited to stay for the tea.
After tea, which everyone agreed was delicious, the usual draw took place, the prizes having been donated by committee members, and by some of the club members.
Margaret took details of those who wished to go on the next outing to Ilfracombe on September 19. This would be followed on the way home by an optional fish and chip supper in Barnstaple.
Anyone wishing to go on this trip, would they please contact either Margaret Gale on 01363 773282 or Eileen James on 01392 851218, to book a place.
Unfortunately it is not possible to give a price for the trip at the moment, as this very much depends on the number going.
